Cancer Stikes OutSupport the 2006 'Dennis Correia Memorial Cancer Strikes Out' Charity Softball Tournament

Grandchildren Should Know Their Grandfathers
Over the past two years, we have raised more than $13,000. All proceeds from the tournament go to the Dennis Correia Fund, maintained by Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The Dennis Correia Fund serves as a perpetual monument to Dennis Correia's life and final struggle, ennobling that final struggle by funding general cancer research. Two months after participating in the first Cancer Strikes Out Charity Softball Tournament, Dennis Correia bowed to liver, lung and bone cancers. He was 52 years old.

I will never forget the day my father passed away: the day the heart of my family was ripped out in an instant, with no possibility of return. Although the initial shock abates, the pain does not go away, it only changes. A dull longing, dreary fatigue and drone of sighs replace the original stab, entrench and never leave. The end result of every family picture becomes the eternal recapitulation of a world gone wrong, especially as compared to the complete photos, taken when he was there, when things were as they should be. And fathers are not the only ones so removed. Cancer strikes babies and grandparents, without discrimination or justification, leaving behind only less populated photos, signifying the emptiness of those who remain.

Even though the prior destruction of cancer cannot be reversed, the progress of the disease can be stemmed and, eventually, crushed. But, this can only be achieved through continued research and discovery. And that is why your donation is so important. We cannot undo what cancer has done, but we can preserve future families, and family photos, signifying our bequest: a world as it should be.

Thank you for your help in the fight against cancer.

Sincerely,
Jared Correia
